The recipient’s name will not be announced publicly. A photo of the winner in a bonnet or durag may be shared, but the face will be blurred. Both decisions are intentional, made out of care and respect to protect you from unwanted or unnecessary attention as you begin this new chapter.
The $500 award will be provided directly to the student. You may use these funds for school supplies, books, meals, or any other needs that support your first year.
Focus on your studies, take care of yourself, and make the most of this opportunity. Your education is the priority.
Competence Over Scalp Coverage 2026
This scholarship is open to students who meet all of the following:
Will be a college freshman in the 2026–2027 academic year
Have been accepted to and plan to attend an HBCU
Wear or value their bonnet or durag
Understand and respect that colleges and universities have rules that must be followed
The core requirement is a short written statement showing that you understand competence lives in your hands and mind, not in scalp coverage & a picture of you in your durag or bonnet.
